چکیده

We analyze data from two FAST satellite passes in the vicinity of auroral surges (as seen in the VIS auroral imager on the Polar satellite) to study the large scale ionospheric electrodynamics of the surge, focusing in particular on the configuration of field-aligned and ionospheric currents. While most previous ground and satellite observations have found the surge to be a region of predominantly upward field-aligned currents (FACs), some satellite observations have found evidence for equal downward and upward FACs near the surge, suggesting that the FACs close locally as opposed to globally through the substorm current wedge. Our observations show that while regions of both upward and downward FACs are present near the surge, there is a significant net upward FAC in the northern portion of meridians passing through the surge and just east of the surge. Current continuity requires that these upward currents be fed by downward currents traditionally thought to be in the eastern portion the auroral substorm bulge. Such a current configuration requires a westward ionospheric current to connect the two FAC regions, and this is supported by our observations of a significant southward electric field in the high Hall conductance surge region, which drives a strong westward Hall electrojet connecting the upward surge FACs and the presumed downward FACs east of the surge.

Nightside ionospheric electrodynamics associated with substorms: PFISR and THEMIS ASI observations

[1] Observations from the newly available Poker Flat Incoherent Scatter Radar have been used to study the ionospheric electrodynamics during the substorm expansion phase. Substorm events selected have been divided into three categories based on onset location relative to the radar, and repeatable features have been identified. West of onset, westward flows increased in response to the passage o...

Temporal and spatial evolution of discrete auroral arcs as seen by Cluster

Two event studies are presented in this paper where intense convergent electric fields, with mapped intensities up to 1350 mV/m, are measured in the auroral upward current region by the Cluster spacecraft, at altitudes between 3 and 5 Earth radii. Both events are from May 2003, Southern Hemisphere, with equatorward crossings by the Cluster spacecraft of the pre-midnight auroral oval. Event 1 oc...

Average field-aligned current configuration parameterized by solar wind conditions

We present the first large-scale comparison of the spatial distribution of field-aligned currents as measured by the Active Magnetosphere and Planetary Electrodynamics Response Experiment, with the location and brightness of the average auroral oval, determined from the Imager for Magnetopause-to-Aurora Global Exploration far ultraviolet instrument. These distributions are compared under the sa...

Astrid-2 and ground-based observations of the auroral bulge in the middle of the nightside convection throat

Results concerning the electrodynamics of the nightside auroral bulge are presented based on simultanous satellite and ground-based observations. The satellite data include Astrid-2 measurements of electric fields, currents and particles from a midnight auroral oval crossing and Polar UVI images of the large-scale auroral distribution. The ground-based observations include STARE and SuperDARN e...

Electrodynamics of the high-latitude trough: Its relationship with convection flows and field-aligned currents

[1] We present a detailed case study of the electrodynamics of a high-latitude trough observed at ~ 12 UT (~1 MLT) on 8 March 2008 using multiple instruments, including incoherent scattering radar (ISR), GPS total electron content (TEC), magnetometers, and auroral imager. The electron density within the trough dropped as much as 80% within 6minutes. This trough was collocated with a countercloc...
